High Power Team 2022

About

Maverick

Maverick is a 9ft tall, 50lb rocket that competed in the 2022 Spaceport America Cup. It's stellar flight took us to 10,432 feet, and was the first rocket to represent BYU since 2019 in New Mexico. We competed in the 10k COTS (Commercial-off-the-Shelf) rocket motor category against 100+ teams from around the world. Maverick featured a custom fiberglass nosecone geometry, and the payload was an anti-sloshing neural network that would attempt to reduce slosh during flight

Structures Engineer

As a structures engineer, I designed and manufactured the vehicle airframe. Our meticulous work updating the OpenRocket simulation led us to get very accurate simulations. Perhaps the most difficult project was the manufacturing of a complex nosecone design where the nose is wider than the rest of the rocket to allow for more space inside the nosecone for our payload and cameras.

2nd Place - James Barrowman Award for Flight Dynamics

Given to the team that flies the closest to their simulated altitude. We simulated 10,450ft and flew to 10,432ft, only 18ft away!

2nd Place - Sportsmanship Award

Given to the team with outstanding sportsmanship towards other teams and ESRA officials.
